Ensuring maximum utilisation of the materials employed in various
designs and constructions has been a priority objective since the constant increase
in the costs of energy and raw materials. This calls both for more precise assignment
of material characteristics incorporating the latest findings in the area of material
sciences and, as far as possible, practical simulation of the subsequent conditions
of material use.
In this context the measurement of strain and displacement has assumed special
significance as it serves to establish fundamental values in terms of material
characteristics. The measured data should be available in a suitable form for
controlling the test test equipment and largely automated processing of these
variables.
